But it wasn’t till I started collecting cigarette cards, and discovered a series sporting limericks, that I encountered verse I wished I had written. There was an old man of PeruWho dreamt he was eating hisshoe. He awoke in the nightIn a terrible frightAnd found it was perfectly true. From a cigarette card, bought in Chester many moons ago Wonderful. Here’s another, remembered as well as I can.A wonderful bird is the pelican,His mouth can hold more than hisbelly can.He can keep in his beakEnough food for a weekI don’t know how the helican.”Some were a little risque.A pretty young girl called BiancaFell asleep as the ship lay atanchorBut awoke in dismayWhen she heard the mate say’Let’s pull up the top sheet andspanker!’I didn’t fully understand that one till years later I went sailing and found out about sheets and spinnakers. Shame on everyone, if this is so.My first introduction to living poetry came through limericks. I had already met Keats and Shelley, but that wasn’t real poetry. I had encountered the verse in the Alice books, which was much much better than Keats or Shelley, and I’d still take “The Walrus and the Carpenter” to a desert island. Oh yes, I wanted to express surprise that The Simpsons provided the only mention of limericks throughout the comic poem season. It reminded me of a time when I was a teenager and much addicted to Mad magazine.

Elvis Presley was young and bouncy in those days, and one week Mad did a parody of Readers Digest including an article called “My Brother Enis, by Elvis the Pelvis…”I seem to have lost the point. On Monday’s episode on BBC 2, Homer Simpson sees an ad for a free trampoline, goes to claim it and finds it is being given away by Krusty the clown, the misanthropic laughter merchant with his own kids’ TV show.
“What’s the deal ?” says Homer suspiciously.”Oh, I used to do a lot of tumbling in the act,” says Krusty airily, “but now I’m phasing it out for more dirty limericks, ‘There was a young man called Enis…’”Yes, ladies and gentlemen, filth on BBC 2 before the watershed. Sir: Media and politicians condemn the appalling decline in our railways since privatisation. When will they be brave enough to acknowledge that the management of British Rail has now been proven to have been far better than they were given credit for?

MARK KEIGHLEY
Preston, Lancashire. I HAVE not yet met anyone in the whole wide world who has made any concrete plans for celebrating the new millennium, and in the same sort of way I did not meet anyone last week or this week who seemed remotely interested in what the nation’s favourite comic poem was.

Someone somewhere organised a contest for everyone to nominate their comic poem, and someone counted all the votes and someone said the winner was Spike Milligan, which is fine by me even if he didn’t write my favourite comic poem, but I did not meet anyone who had had their interest in poetry quickened either by that or by National Poetry Day

Except Krusty the clown on The Simpsons Did you notice that? A remarkable coincidence. Given Millbank’s tendency to exercise greater control on Labour candidates, progressive opinion south of the border will look to the Scottish Parliament for a radical lead on global issues Independence could strengthen, not weaken, social ties

ANDREW KERR
Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. On issues like opposition to nuclear weapons and arms sales to regimes with an appalling record on human rights, the SNP has far more in common with the 1992 Labour candidate Bruce Kent than with George Robertson or Gordon Brown. I hope the renewed interest helps to unearth some of these missing half hours.

People who need to change life, investment and protection policies still tend to face swingeing fees, while cancelling policies early can render them virtually worthless because of exit charges. All life companies have to offer better value for money by reducing expenses and charges. Historically, they have been highly rigid and even the newer generation of policies marketed as ultra flexible are often fairly unadaptable, or provide flexibility only at a price. There is still a reluctance to tell customers exactly what proportion of their premiums will go in charges and what will be invested for their benefit.Eagle Star’s answer is to cut through this jungle by instituting a simple and transparent charging structure on a new generation of policies, announced this weekend, which with the help of a new and more flexible computer system eliminates “hidden” costs such as bid/offer spreads, exit penalties and the like.Life products also have to be more flexible. Even for the most sophisticated buyer, it only allows comparisons to be made between life offices. The disclosure rules provide some help, but the quantity of information they stipulate – and the way in which it is presented – probably leaves people more, not less, confused. Hence they do not provide the facts that consumers need to judge whether or not they are getting a fair deal – a failure that the new regulatory regime has done little to correct.Consumers want to know exactly what they are buying and how much it costs. All too often they do not even understand what it is they have bought.

Many life offices retain the notion that people do not – and perhaps cannot – understand finan- cial products. Or they research consumer attitudes thoroughly but then fail to take the findings into account when designing products. This is not just a case of consumers being sold products they do not need or want. Huge amounts of energy, ingenuity and money are still being expended on devising over-complicated policies to meet straightforward needs. Little wonder that life products are no longer seen as relevant by large swathes of the population. Most life companies either make blind assumptions about consumers, without trying to get a proper understanding of what they actually want. The new rules may lay down an unduly prescriptive, cumbersome and costly way of forcing companies to heed the interests of consumers, but they are only enforcing a philosophy that should be central to any life company with a long-term commitment to the UK market. In my view, the industry has a greater difficulty: its slowness in recognising the fundamental shift that has taken place in recent years in consumer attitudes and expectations.Despite the new disclosure regime, designers of life products remain obsessed about points of detail that are all too often lost on the consumer. So determined have they been to comply with the letter of the new rules, that they have failed to address the bigger issue.

That is, how to rebuild the confidence of consumers and secure a viable future in the long-term savings market. Failure could mean the end of the insurance industry as we have known it.
Contrary to what some in the life industry appear to think, the sector’s biggest problem is not regulation. But its response to the barrage of public criticism and the tougher regulatory regime it now labours under has been disappointing

Essentially, life companies have missed the point. THE life assurance industry – for long the black sheep of Britain’s financial services – is struggling to mend its ways.

A relaxed — very relaxed — Terry Gilliam talks about the challenges of his new film.

Just to explain, I had no control over payments out of the bank accounts.”The only question which Mr Leeson does not answer concerns one of the offences with which he has been charged in Singapore, that of allegedly forging a document to conceal a missing pounds 50m from the Barings head office.. “If anybody does genuinely believe that any money has been stolen you would have heard about it from the Singaporean inspectors by now. So it adds to your belief that you can do it because you probably find it easier to forget the debits and remember the credits in your own mind, because the credit is what you want …”He says he did not steal any money for his account. “So the concealment only had to occur once a month.”As business increased, Mr Lesson says, the size of the errors being made increased.

By the end of 1994 the secret account had losses of pounds 208m.”If you go through to 1995, and as crazy as it may seem, there were days when I could lose pounds 25-30m. There were days when I made pounds 50m, based off the position.”Not every day is a down day. He says that around 20 traders working for him all knew about the account.Failing to give evidence against any of his superiors, Mr Leeson says that none of the people he worked for knew of the secret account’s existence. He explains that Barings Futures Singapore, the bank’s subsidiary which he worked for, only took a balance sheet reading once a month. Mr Leeson says, though, that he continued using the error account after that to conceal the errors of his colleagues. that is the first trade that made its way into the ‘five eights’ account.” The five eights account, or error account, was used by Mr Leeson to conceal from management in London losses that he or his traders made. The account had originally been set up legitimately by Barings, says Mr Leeson, to hide errors made by the Singapore traders from the London regulators.Speaking directly to the media for the first time since his arrest, Mr Leeson says that during 1992 the account was first used by him to conceal the errors of his colleagues. He is not pushed in the interview as to if and when he went on to use the account to conceal his own trading losses.By May 1993 Mr Leeson says that the error account had moved into credit. everybody else was so busy that they couldn’t really check what she was doing and she was just helping out.”When the traders later met up in the Hard Rock Cafe the woman was crying.”I felt very sorry for the girl in that I didn’t want her to lose her job and so …

But, you know, she had no real experience of working for a trading house,” Mr Leeson tells Sir David Frost in an interview to be screened on BBC1 tonight.”We tried to keep her away from the phones but there was one occasion .. when she had to answer a few phones … He says the woman had sold 20 futures contracts instead of buying them.”One of the locals had a young lady working for him, somebody who could work straightaway and help us out. DAVID HELLIER

One Friday evening in September 1992 Nick Leeson and his team of traders at Barings bank discovered that an inexperienced woman dealer had run up pounds 20,000 losses on the Singapore markets, the imprisoned former dealer has disclosed.
In his first interview since being arrested in Frankfurt in February, Mr Leeson said it was this discovery that forced him to activate the notorious secret account which eventually led to the collapse of the bank earlier this year. Lottery roll-over

Talk about deadline pressure. ABC’s decision to not only cancel “Ugly Betty” but to reduce the show’s episode order from 22 to 20 has left producers racing to tie up four years’ worth of story lines in just a handful of episodes.

diplomatically, the UN was marginalised by the Dayton process. It was not even represented at the talks.”The 50-year old UN Charter concentrates on the need to preserve “international peace and security”, and contains few direct provisions for dealing with internal conflicts. In the longer term, global warming will also be a factor. The Sipri report highlights the changed nature of international security problems and the pressures on the UN, especially in Bosnia, where it was outflanked.”While the UN in its 50th anniversary year played a role in almost every conflict situation the new emphasis was on conflict prevention … Conflict is increasingly expected to break out over scarce supplies of food and water, as population increases. It is also hard to see the UN intervening on a large scale fashion in any of these conflicts.”He said conflicts in Namibia, Angola and Mozambique had been resolved successfully, but in future the UN might stay out. “They will sooner or later be worked through,” he said.”But Africa is different It’s not Cold-War related and is connected with resources. The worst last year, by far, was Chechnya, estimated to have killed 10,000 to 40,000 people.

But, according to Trevor Findlay, the Sipri project leader for peace-keeping and regional security, many other conflicts go unnoticed. “East Timor, Bougainville (Papua New Guinea), the Muslim secession in the South Philippines, the Chittagong Hill Tracts (Bangladesh) – they’ve been going on for years but they’re not big enough yet.”Dr Findlay thought the number of conflicts would decrease further as the end of the Cold War had enabled a number of disputes that had been bubbling under the surface of former Communist states, such as the former Yugoslavia – and on the edges of the former Soviet Union, to break out. The Royal Opera also presents the 1886 five-act Italian version at the Proms (and live on Radio 3) on 20 July (booking: 0171-589 8212). Seen now on stage at Chichester in the author’s own production, the performance is brilliant beyond belief.

This time round, of course, she’s playing to an audience, not just to the camera’s impassive eye. In the original TV version of Alan Bennett’s monologue A Bed Among the Lentils, Maggie Smith’s performance was merely excellent. And when did you last hear a Don Carlos where that aria was the low point?Unusually enough, Dupuy fared rather better in the throw-away (if rather too thrown-away) coloratura of her first scene Everyone else grew in stature. Well, I say everyone else, but while Alagna settled down, he hardly made capital of his most persuasive and (at best) exciting voice He was, in a word, impersonal. By contrast, Jose Van Dam’s Philippe, with half the vocal possibilities (his once famed legato sostenuto has dried out somewhat), sang from a full, noble heart. Hampson was a splendid, ardent, involving Rodrigue, taking time to find his finesse, his honeyed way with the bel canto ingratiations of the role, but once he did – and his fond farewell to Carlos will be one of the evening’s enduring memories – it was a happy release indeed. So, too, the glorious sound of Karita Mattila’s Elisabeth de Valois. This ample voice may take a while to warm, to speak effortlessly in those floated pianissimi so beloved of the lyrico spinto soprano, but, once it does, there’s literally no holding it.

Mattila’s final scene was thrilling, the arching phrases of “Toi qui sus le neant” filling both house, hearts and minds Elisabeth travels a long way in Don Carlos. For Mattila, the real journey may just be beginning.n Further perfs 17, 22, 25, 28 June, 1, 4 July, ROH, Covent Gdn (booking: 0171-304 4000). Only Martine Dupuy’s unruly account of Eboli’s “O don fatal” (too many histrionics, not enough singing) proved anti-climactic. Elisabeth’s explosive return, knocking aside the departing Inquisitor as if he were no more than an intrusive insect, created startling new tensions; the restoration of the Quartet, beautifully blocked, raised the musical temperature. Kurt Rydl’s hacking black basso threatens judgement with menaces in every cavernous phrase. The evening turned on this scene. King Philippe is discovered, a black, lonely, bowed figure “entombed” amidst so much grey stone – an austere image memorably repeated for Carlos’s prison in Act 5. As he reflects on the burdens of his kingship and marriage, the thought crosses our minds that the woman asleep in the bed beyond may or may not be Elisabeth.

In a chilling moment, she gets up and leaves like an overnight whore (or even Eboli) without so much as a second glance. And then the Inquisitor enters like the proverbial bottled spider, hooded and bent double over two walking-sticks with fire literally sprouting (albeit a little half-heartedly) in his path. The sunny skies, the scrubbed pine, the jolly bright colours of the auto-da-fe (“what a day, what a day, for an…”) were nicely at odds with the awfulness of the scene, it’s true, but still, notwithstanding flames sprouting about the heretics as if on “gas mark 5″, this was pretty routine stuff. And then Verdi hit us with Act 4 – the “Grand Inquisitor scene”, one of the finest in all his output – and it was as if the half-cooked (if you’ll forgive the choice of metaphor) had in an instant been done to a turn. Up to, and including, the auto-da-fe scene (and that’s a lot of the opera), this Don Carlos was a sound, safe, but hardly sweeping proposition. Even Bondy, that most physical and liberating of directors, seemed inhibited by the sheer weight of his responsibility. The flow was halting, rubatos awkwardly turned, co-ordination between pit and stage decidedly shaky. Bernard Haitink, too, was having problems finding his length and breadth.

At home to Watford yesterday, they saw United take the lead twice (firstly after just 41 seconds). CHIEF CONSTABLES last night said they felt confident of reaching an agreement with the Home Office over the key elements of the Sheehy report on police pay and responsibilities. So there is a debate on whether majority voting should apply. It is difficult to see how a majority view can be achieved other than by reference to a court, which would fly in the face of the voluntary nature of bank-led restructurings.Where costs escalate, the cause is usually specific rather than a general slackness. The legend at the forefront of most minds was not one of greatness but that of the 38-year-old Australian’s fragile temperament, which has robbed him of many major championships. He is the leader of the Government and any prime minister can lay down any standards he wishes. One question not yet on its computers is whether viewers approve of messing around with theme tunes.

Nobody seriously pretends that a football manager is ever secure, but Clough made himself as safe as it is possible to be.It is odd, though, that the one manager who seemed to have a more accurate vision than anyone else is the one whose features came to reveal the most strain. ‘The switch of court and only 200 spectators, there just wasn’t any atmosphere, and having to restart the game did not help me.Pioline, trying to become the first Frenchman to win the event since Pierre Darmon in 1963, was playing in only his second final, having lost to Pete Sampras, the world No 1, in Lyons last October.. But though it starts like a symphony, the progression of the music is then rigidly schematic, like house music, where things are added or altered at rigorous four-bar intervals.Apart from a few incursions into folkie territory – a clumsy hoedown section in which everyone scurries for new instruments and a baffling dash of honky-tonk – the piece depends for much of its effect on a fairly seamless transition between instruments: a heavily-sustained guitar which ‘becomes’ breathy female vocals, keyboards which ‘become’ glockenspiel, and so on. Dividends fell from the peak of 6.25 per cent in 1873 to 3.75 per cent in 1878, having been affected by coal strikes in the mid-1870s, but rose to 6.75 per cent in 1883. Firms such as Clifford Chance and Theodore Goddard, for instance, were already conseils juridiques; others, including Linklaters & Paines, qualified under old EC provisions giving them the right, if they had practised there for 18 months, to become members of the local bar.But people applying now to practise in France are falling between two stools, says Hamish Adamson, international director at the Law Society.’There is no aptitude test yet, nor any route as there was before simply to practise as lawyers of their home state.’Mr Adamson says that if a draft directive on rights of establishment for lawyers, agreed by the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe, is adopted by the Commission, solicitors would be allowed to practise from branch offices in other European cities. Which would still, ‘ he persisted across Prior’s interruptions, ‘get you back to France by the end of November.”Why?”You know why Two months ago you were having memory lapses Rather bad ones actually Anyway this is purely hypothetical Wasn’t my decision -’Prior leant forward. ‘I think I’d be happier if you did another twelve weeks’ home service.

We met in August, we got engaged in August, so …”And when do you leave for France?”Tonight I’m glad to be going.”Yes.’Prior smiled ‘Do you think I’m ready to go back?’A slight hesitation. ‘Oh, by the way, congratulations on your engagement.’Hmm, Prior thought. Charles Manning’s congratulations had also been brief, though in his case the brevity might be excused, since he’d had to take Prior’s cock out of his mouth to be able to say anything at all ‘Thank you.”Have you fixed a date?”Next August. Rivers thought Prior was entirely unaware of what he’d said, though that was always a dangerous assumption to make about Prior. Perhaps because he’d recently been thinking about his own father Rivers was more than ususally aware of the strong father-son element in his relationship with Prior He had no son; Prior utterly rejected his natural father.

But only after I’d pulled the trigger, so there was nothing I could do about it. ‘Fraid I killed you every time.”Ah, so it isn’t a bad nightmare, then?’They smiled at each other. Prior would enjoy the skirmish at the time – there was nothing he liked better – but he’d regret it later. ‘Well, sit yourself down,’ Rivers said, taking Prior’s coat and pointing to a chair by the fire ‘How are you?”Quite well Chest works Tongue works.”Nightmares?”Hmm.. a few.

I had one where the faces on the revolver targets – you know, horrible snarling baby-eating boche – turned into the faces of the people I love. Rivers opened the door of his rooms, and stood aside to let Prior enter.Somehow or other he had to prevent this meeting becoming a confrontation, as consultations with Prior still tended to do. But now his chest was remarkably clear, a reflection perhaps of the satisfaction he felt at going back to France. He’d never gone out on the top landing to greet Prior as he did with all his other patients because he knew how intolerable he would find it to be seen fighting for breath. Sometimes, during the past summer, he’d listed to Prior’s step on these stairs and counted the pauses.
