“I have been at CCS for about 15 years; in fact, they sponsored me through my final year at college. I started out in research in the private client area and moved into fund management in 1992, when I took over the fund which became the Hallmark Growth Portfolio. So I was in charge when we repositioned the fund in July 1995.”The reason for a fundamental change in the fund’s investment strategy was that Cassells had become convinced that market conditions had changed significantly since its launch in the mid-1980s. He explains: “The fund had become too staid and wasn’t really delivering any growth and had been run on a total return basis. So we put the emphasis away from income and on to the growth stocks as we wanted a portfolio which was more in line with modern market conditions.”With the emphasise on growth in the existing portfolio, there was a gap in the CCS range for a similar income-orientated fund and the CCS Hallmark Income Portfolio Fund duly arrived in July 1997, also with Mr Cassells as its manager. Hallmark Income and Hallmark Growth are “sister funds,” says Mr Cassells.
“We have roughly 50 per cent bonds and 50 per cent equity in the income fund, whereas the growth fund has only about 15 per cent in bonds and cash and the rest in equities.Mr Cassells has achieved a strong performance record with the Hallmark Growth Fund, particularly since its change in investment policy. “The fund is up from about £55m in 1995 to just under £70m now, and much of that is linked to the fact that we believed in this strange thing called the ‘new economy’ back in 1995. We have reaped the benefits of being positioned in the right area of the market and of having been in it from the start of its outperformance,” he says.Despite his confidence in the benefits of his long-term strategy, Mr Cassells does admit that “we were very lucky that, in the last quarter of last year, we were well positioned for the take-off in TMT (technology/media/telecoms) stocks and it was luck more than judgement. We had to spend most of December, January and February whittling down some very large positions in these stocks and we were in the position of defending gains we had already made rather than ‘taking a punt’ on an old economy portfolio in order to try and make money.”As a result, much of Mr Cassells’ strategy this year has been based on a portfolio of defensive stocks. “We have gone heavily into pharmaceuticals and healthcare and also into financials and interest-rate-sensitive utilities.”But this does not mean that the fund has abandoned its interest in the new economy. Mr Cassells says: “The third group of stocks we are looking at are those companies benefiting from increased use of technology, such as Chloride, which is transforming itself from a boring engineering and electrical company into a genuine new economy company, making equipment that can deal with the problem of power surges in electronic equipment. When understanding technology, you need to understand this third tier of the market – the ‘transformed economy’.
By plotting a middle path between the old and new economies, ‘transformed’ companies are primarily established companies with healthy profit streams which hook into the e-commerce revolution to enhance their growth prospects.”Having been a long-term participant in the “new economy”, Mr Cassells sees these stocks as having already reached a considerable state of maturity He argues: “We are all new economy companies now. The next major theme we see developing is that bandwidth will be made so abundant and cheap that you will be able to give it away. So the emphasis is going to be on companies that can use the technology to best effect, rather than on the technology itself.”This belief has important implications for the future strategy of the Hallmark Growth Fund. Mr Cassells says: “This is why you have had such volatility in technology companies recently. The one thing you can be sure of is that the winners over the next five years are not going to be the same as the winners over the last five years. We are slowly repositioning the portfolio towards a more overweight position in the TMT sectors, but I believe you are going to be getting more steady growth from these companies in the future, not the 100 per cent per quarter that you were seeing in the early part of this year.”.

Patience is a much neglected virtue in the stock market. Many private investors are not prepared to take a relatively long-term view and as soon as a share under performs it suffers the old heave-ho.
But the stock market can be a volatile place. And it is often wise to give a share, at least for a time, the benefit of the doubt. I do not believe in adopting a rigid formula, such as the stop-loss system, in which, irrespective of the circumstances, a share is dumped once it falls below a certain price.I am not suggesting investors stick with a share, come hell or high water – a sure recipe for disaster.
My point is that a shareholder must use his own judgement; he will not always get it right but he will not, in effect, have decisions made for him.Since it was launched in February last year, the no pain, no gain portfolio has sold shares when I took the view there was no point in hanging around waiting for losses to increase Deep Sea Leisure is an example. The shares were sold at 102.5p, well down from my 250p buying price. It was clear the aquarium group was no longer enjoying itself and the price is now bumping along at 42.5p.It could be argued that I stayed with Deep Sea’s declining fortunes for far too long. A stop-loss system would have taken me out at around 200p or 220p. And it would also have ensured profits were taken before they evaporated in the dot burn-out.But it would have failed me if I had used it in connection with S&U and Safeway S&U, a financial group, went down to 216p following my tip. The shares are now 360p, comfortably above the 292.5p buying price. Safeway, interim results tomorrow, plunged to 154.75p after the shares entered the portfolio at 248.5p; the price is now 320.5p.Naturally I agonised about dumping them.

“But the frustrating thing was that we were only brought together in the twilight of our careers. It’s the first step on the road to 1999, not the be-all and end-all.”Woodward can rest easy in the knowledge that by naming five debutants in a line-up every bit as radical as those of ‘84 and ‘88, he has caught the mood of the times. Even the manager Roger Uttley is reinventing himself as an ultra-modern baby boomer; the grizzled veteran of England’s 1980 Grand Slam side and assistant coach of Carling’s massively experienced and deeply conservative team of the early 1990s has thrown himself fully behind the new idealism.”When we won the Slam, we had a pack containing umpteen England captains and more caps than anyone could be bothered to count,” he said. I can’t honestly say that I’d have picked the same line-up had we been playing New Zealand.”I want to win this game and I’m as passionate in my desire as any of the players but if we don’t win I’m not going to lose a night’s sleep Whatever happens, we’ll learn from the experience.
Defeat by a Wallaby side some way short of full throttle would have the opposite effect, especially with the All Blacks and the Springboks lurking around the next couple of corners.”Look, this isn’t a World Cup final,” said the coach this week “Had it been, I might have picked a different side. An English victory would lend the new coach an air of authority to go alongside the energy, enterprise and enthusiasm he brought to the job. As a direct response to that setback, the Wallabies gave their old guard a one-way ticket to the scrapheap, replaced them with a bunch of kids and went on to beat England in the 1991 World Cup Final.
It could go either way this afternoon and therein lies the fascination. Until, that is, 1988, when Geoff Cooke played the boldest of hands. The gambler hit the jackpot, England won and the Will Carling era was born.

I expected him to dominate this year due to the confidence of finally winning the title, but it hasn’t happened. He will be glad of the summer break so that he can go away and think about things and hopefully come back stronger for the last six races of the season. Daniel I think perhaps he doesn’t have as much desire to be champion; he doesn’t care if he wins or not His attitude is “life goes on” whether he wins or loses. Sometimes a huge drive to be champion can make you faster and more determined, and I don’t think Kimi has it at present. My other theory is that he came back from a big gap last season so thinks coming back from seven or eight points will be easy, but his opposition is far tougher this season. McLaren have no politics hanging over them, and Massa is stronger, too. Paul Do you think that the Kimi situation is similar to that of Mika Haikkinen in 2001? Back then, Mika was a double world champion and nearly won the title in 2000, but a few poor races at the start of the season left him de-motivated, and he turned his back on the sport at the end of the year.
Could Kimi do the same? Daniel Well, Finns don’t stay in F1 for as long as other drivers. I think Kimi enjoys racing in F1, but he hates everything else out of the car. I thought he would be more up for this season after being champion, but he is capable of rising his game. I would still put my safe money on him, despite being very indifferent so far in 2008. Paul What about his teammate, Massa? He showed a lot of signs of improvement since the start of the season, but at the last two rounds in Britain and Germany he has been poor. Is this just a blip or could it be the start of a downturn in form for the Brazilian? Daniel Massa is definitely faster this season, and he has become a more mature and all-rounded driver. He even comfortably beat Kimi in the wet conditions in Monaco which I feel is significant.
He fought through the field in Montreal, but the last two GPs have showed the old Massa hasn’t left us completely. Paul What do you think has been the difference to Massa this season compared to previous years? After all, he won three races last season yet never looked like challenging for the title. So far, he has won three races this season and is in with a good chance. Daniel I think he has done better at tracks he hasn’t gone as well on in the past Monaco is the best example. He has never had a decent race there until this season, battling back from a low position. In Canada, his great pass on Rubens and Heikki showed his race craft is getting better; however, his defence of positions is still appalling and that needs to change. Paul Can you see him keeping up a title charge for the rest of the season? Apart from Brazil, he never finished last season strongly, and the way it’s looking at the minute, he is Ferrari’s best hope of winning the driver’s title. Daniel Kimi and Lewis’s errors have maybe flattered him a bit. After giving Lewis a gap the size of the Grand Canyon at the hairpin in Germany, he isn’t quite at the heights necessary, I think in all honesty, his best bet is more errors from Lewis and Kimi. Paul Can you see Lewis winning the title, then? He has probably looked the most solid out of the top three drivers. Daniel I think Lewis has put himself in a very good position, he is getting to grips with his McLaren, and his last two performances have been supreme, but he has shown that he can crack under pressure. He has had a few very bad races, and I think as team leader that has brought him a new set of challenges, such as car setup and even more media interest. Paul You mentioned there that he can crack under pressure. Is that a reference to Bahrain, Montreal, and France? Daniel Yeah definitely, in Bahrain he wasn’t focused at all at the start.
In Montreal, he made a very amateur mistake, and he never recovered from his penalty in at Magny-Cours. I think we have seen two different Lewis Hamiltons this season, like we have seen two Kimi Raikkonens. If Hamilton can build on the momentum he has, he could be unstoppable. People said that after Monaco and then look what happened! Paul Do you think that Lewis’ personal life affects his on-track performance at all? It is well-documented that he enjoys a busy social life, especially when compared to his title rivals. Daniel The best way to look at it is to look at his schedule between France and Silverstone, he only had one’s day rest but he still dominated the entire field in the rain So maybe no is the answer in that case. Sometimes its better to keep busy, but I do think that closer to the end of the championship battle, he needs to focus more on the racing and McLaren need to give him less commitments, too. Paul And what about the fourth title contender this year, Robert Kubica? He has just come out of nowhere with a title charge, taking his first win and scoring consistently. Can he really challenge for the title right up to the wire? Daniel Kubica has been the best driver out of all the contenders so far.

On the Twentieth Century Fox lot in Los Angeles, the lobby of the Steven Bochco Building is crammed with little old ladies and fat men in beards, all waiting to audition for a couple of bit parts in Bochco’s NYPD Blue I am waiting to meet Bochco’s latest leading man. Most actors who crave a role in a Bochco TV show – and, given that his hits include both LA Law and Hill Street Blues, as well as NYPD Blue, that, in America, means most actors (full stop) – have to present their credentials at the Steven Bochco Building in person But not Anthony LaPaglia Bochco went to woo him. Yet, even when he was offered the role of successor to Daniel Benzali’s bald bruiser of a defending attorney in the second series of the literally (at 23 episodes) long-running legal drama Murder One, LaPaglia played hard to get.
Not that he wasn’t flattered to be offered the part, but he wasn’t keen to leave New York, even for LA, and refused to sign the standard five- year contract. Eventually, though – after talking it through with his close friend Stanley Tucci, the weaselly Richard Cross from the first series of Murder One – he did agree to sign up for two years. So who is he, this 36-year-old actor who can afford to play so hard to get with one of the most powerful players in all American TV?Dark and intense-looking, with eyes possibly a little too close together to make him a conventional hunk, LaPaglia was brought up in Australia, and only left for America in 1984 on realising, at the age of 24, that he wasn’t going to make it as a professional soccer player. But he’d done a bit of acting part-time, and quickly made his mark on the New York stage and began to branch out into movies. “Those of us who make television series,” Bochco has said, “have been chasing this guy for years.
We all know how special he is.”It was the 1990 film Betsy’s Wedding, in which LaPaglia played a mobster – and stood head and cashmere shoulders above everyone else in the cast – that really brought him to Bochco’s attention. Yet it was to Alan Alda, who directed that movie, that Bochco had first turned when looking to replace the temperamental Daniel Benzali as Murder One’s second-run lead. “We assumed,” Bochco admits, “that, as in years past, Lapaglia wouldn’t be interested. We decided to take another chance.”So what was it about LaPaglia that made him first choice? Not just the fact that he met Bochco’s preference for avoiding familiar facess. LaPaglia, Bochco felt, would also bring a dimension or two to Murder One that Benzali lacked. Hair, for starters – plus the same kind of smouldering intensity that David Caruso, as saintly Detective John Kelly, brought to NYPD Blue.Sure enough, when Murder One (Mark II) went out in the States, LaPaglia’s powerful performance as uncompromising attorney James Wyler scored highly with the critics.
Yet, despite the actor’s undoubted charisma and sex appeal, Bochco’s Midas touch and the glowing reviews, series two has bombed in America just as series one did.Things may be different here. Nearly a week into my state of utter melancholy, a funny and unexpected event helped me break out of my mental funk watching Kurt Warner try to quarterback the Arizona Cardinals to victory in Super Bowl XLIII. In one of the greatest Super Bowls ever played, Warner, 37, and the Cardinals (12-8) lost an epic NFL championship game for the ages to the Pittsburgh Steelers (27-23) Sunday night at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.
Whether or not it had to do with the Steelers coverage on him, there just were not any big plays in the first half.Except the crazy 100-yard interception return for a touchdown by Steelers linebacker James Harrison, which many people are calling the greatest play in Super Bowl history.Please. How does Simon’s other show compare to “American Idol”?
Along the way to the denouement, lots of bathos (the allegations of pimping), a bit of pathos and lashings of irony. When Mr Aitken spoke, misty-eyed, about “the simple sword of truth and the trusty shield of British fair play”, he already knew that he had the dagger of deceit concealed on his person. “I began making little drawings for myself to express how I felt. It was a little bit like keeping a diary that described how my feelings had grown.”The very first drawing, which served as a thumbnail signature to a domestic note, featured Kim herself with freckles, large eyes and long fair hair (a male figure with equally large eyes but with shorter dark hair, representing Roberto, followed). For a journalist, and for many others, the Jonathan Aitken story has all the qualities of a ripping good Saturday-morning read. For the dramatist, it has all the qualities of proper tragedy to the full Greek prescription
Central to the tragedy is Mr Aitken’s flawed character. Nothing unites the nation quite like the ruin of a wealthy and well connected man.
A good court case, preferably with dramatic last-minute evidence, and a strong sub-plot of family anguish, add immeasurably to the appeal of the story. We need politicians who have a vision and who then, in honesty and steadfastness, stand by it.`A Global Ethic for Global Politics and Economics’, by Hans Kung, is published this month by SCM Press (pounds 14.95 and pounds 25). But we do not need politicians who say one thing and then do another. It needs to discover mechanisms to achieve a new equilibrium between slimmed-down production and social responsibility, between a policy of savings and structural reform, between human rights and human obligations – above all between the responsibilities of the state and of the individual.Tony Blair has given the programme for this when he spoke of the need to make a “marriage of a more human society with economic competitiveness and flexibility in employment”. Rather it must be one with an ethical foundation, without fundamentalism yet without an arbitrary pluralism. It must discover a binding ethic which enables individual fulfilment within the context of an acknowledged responsibility towards society. To achieve those common values, the new Europe needs a balance between economic strategies and ethical judgement, between a stable currency and a stable society, between open markets and social justice.
Tony Blair’s New Labour, above all, has broken the right-left pattern. (By contrast the Social Democratic Party in Germany looks like Old Labour: its rhetoric of the class struggle can no longer command a majority.)But if new directions are called for they must be on a new ethical basis. The globalisation of the world’s economy is inescapable and unstoppable, but it has some extremely negative side-effects. Should it be allowed to elevate the making of profit to the sole and supreme criterion we must expect serious social conflicts and crises. No one should have any false illusions: the issues here are not just economic questions, they are highly political and ultimately also ethical questions – and they involve the whole of society. What we need is not just the globalisation of the economy, of technology and of the media but also a globalisation of ethics. For how is a world to become more just and more peaceful if, in its various regions, there are contrary ethical norms and frameworks, or even none at all? We need now to discover an ethical common denominator to which all nations and all interest groups, employers and employees, believers and non-believers, can commit themselves. The answer is not a re-evangelised Christian Europe But nor is it a purely technocratic Europe. So state involvement needs to be reduced and the labour market made more flexible.
Bryan and Farrell imply that advances in technology make isolation of risk – a central part of financial services – much easier. But that does not mean there will be no failures. As Kari Lampikoski and Jack Emden point out in Igniting Innovation, “The continuous change in financial markets is a kind of two-edged sword: it constantly brings new challenges and opportunities but it also causes major risks to financial institutions.”. Work being done by Andersen Consulting also suggests that – despite the growth of financial behemoths – career opportunities in finance will not be confined to big-name organisations. He claims the organisation’s hallmark is “our energy and innovation”. Consequently, it seeks recruits who have the imagination and the drive to keep the bank one step ahead of the competition That is the sort of thing all businesses are liable to say. But the delivery of it – particularly in the financial services sector – is rather more tricky.Another new book, Market Unbound, by McKinsey & Company consultants Lowell Bryan and Diana Farrell, argues that the globalisation of capital – which is one of the drivers of the immense changes everybody is talking about – will create many opportunities for companies of all shapes and sizes.
The spate of mergers and takeovers is one response to this situation. Another is to seek to be innovative. The arrival of operations such as Direct Line demonstrates how the market can be fundamentally altered by one good idea. But the recent slide in that business’s results as rivals have sought a piece of the action also shows that it is impossible to sit back and relax. One banking organisation that – after a rocky period at the end of the 1980s – has established a reputation for innovation is Citibank, the US financial services giant headed by engineering graduate John Reed. Rising expectations on the part of customers and increasing competition are putting tremendous pressure on financial services organisations. This translated as “pay 3 per cent for deposit money, lend it out at 6 per cent and be on the golf course by 3pm”.
Any graduate expecting a career in banking or a related business to be as simple as that today is going to be in for a rude awakening. The stable situation that existed in financial services until comparatively recently was characterised by a bank executive quoted in the recently- published book Igniting Innovation as the “3-6-3 rule”. “I don’t need to rent an office and the meeting cost me three cups of coffee.”.
One thing that is going to confront graduates entering the world of finance more than any other is change. Now, just about every industry claims that it is changing at an unprecedented rate. But there can be no doubt that the world of pin-stripe suits and bowler hats that their fathers came across has been replaced by computer screens and other mainfestations of high technology. “I chose a central place and we sat in the bar and drank coffee,” says Theobald. A company’s clients, in fact, are likely to be equally office-less.Jonathan Theobald, a video director/producer, runs his company Country Films from his Wimbledon home.
“The video industry is full of freelancers,” he says.”I think people feel uncomfortable holding meetings in their own homes. It is difficult for both the company and client with interruptions from spouses, pets and children.”Recently he organised a meeting in the Langham Hilton Hotel, north of Oxford Circus. His client was based in Hereford and the public relations people came from Shropshire Both were visiting London on business anyway. According to Neil Dookun, the company’s operations manager, “Aroma is a great place to be seen, we’re very vibrant, very lifestyle, and we’re riding on the back of a trend.”Many organisations are now peopled by homeworkers, freelancers and consultants. They have a motto: “15 minutes of sunshine,” and pulse to Latin American samba as customers soak up the Mediterranean oranges, aquamarines and ochres of the decor. Coffee is their speciality and comes frothed, whipped, iced, decaffeinated and flavoured.”The idea is to come off the streets of London and have a 15-minute holiday,” says David Carter, manager of the Bishopsgate branch of Aroma.Customers include employment agencies conducting job interviews, fashion companies with portfolios and City workers holding meetings away from the formality of the office. The tables are big and we see lots of PCs, mobile phones and briefcases coming out.”Far less discreet in tone are the string of Aroma cafes which have sprung up around London.
“We have no music, the atmosphere is subtle and people can talk undisturbed. A table of businessmen drinking one cup of coffee an hour does not make financial sense when tired and parched gallery-goers are queuing up outside.”We are very happy to be a venue for business meetings,” says Mike Rickard, general manager of the brasserie at the Sainsbury Wing. For corporate clients who view the exhibition in private she will talk finance afterwards in one of Smithfield’s cafes or fish restaurants. Most cafes at galleries and concert halls are happy to become offices, as long as customers keep buying refreshments. Very few people could work entirely at home.”Devoting attention to the right venue is as important as if you were renting an office. For Caroline Blunden, a specialist in contemporary Chinese painting, ambience is important because she frequently entertains visiting Chinese artists. “I choose places which are informal and where the artists can do a bit of sightseeing at the same time,.” she says.Blunden is a regular at the Design Museum cafe and at the South Bank Centre, which provide “great views of the Tower and the Houses of Parliament”.Blunden splits her working day between home in Battersea, the Alan Baxter Gallery in Clerkenwell – where she is currently exhibiting around a dozen Chinese artists – and her virtual offices.
