A squad of Italian soldiers, KFOR peacekeepers, was now manning a checkpoint at the very spot where Nato killed those dozens of Albanian refugees. Indeed, they were in my hand when I stood next to the old Turkish bridge at Bistrazin and found the very spot in the ditch where I had first seen those pictures scattered in the mud.The “spray” marks of the bomb that destroyed the tractor – the tractor which had the burned, naked man in the cab – were clearly visible on the road. They lay on the back seat of my car as I drove the long road from Pristina to Pec and on to Djakovica, to the very stretch of road where I had seen that carnage just seven months earlier. So when I landed in Budapest and drove down to Belgrade and then on to Kosovo, the folder with those five snapshots and the medical certificate travelled with me. Pieces of shrapnel, dozens of notebooks and faxed messages and propaganda booklets and tapes of Nato press conferences and newspaper clippings. The pictures lay in a folder in my library, the Mediterranean outside the window, until my return to Kosovo this month.
I went back – as I always do after such conflicts – to find out what happened in the war. We journalists may be the only witnesses to history, but we need to return to discover even 50 per cent of the reality, to distinguish the lies from the truth. And the young woman in the smaller passport snapshot seemed almost bored as she faced the camera I wiped some of the mud from her mouth She had two magnificent ruby earrings and tied- back hair. The old man was wearing striped pyjamas and a traditional Albanian conical hat and was smoking a cigarette. Could I ever find them, I wondered? Were they dead or alive? After the war, I took these photographs back to my home in Beirut along with all the other detritus a journalist gathers on assignment.
The couple on the sofa were obviously at home, sitting on a sofa with a woollen covered seat, the man’s right arm draped round the shoulders of his young wife, his left hand on the chest of his son Oddly, none of them was smiling The man, in a black polo-necked pullover, looked worried. Her blood type was B, and the document had been signed by a doctor in Djakovica – or Gjakove, as the Serb certificate also gave the town’s name in Albanian – on 16 March, 1993 But it was the family snapshots which held my attention. It had no one “on the ground” to find out, it said. When I took the photographs from the ditch – a few feet from the man’s body in the tree, the man with the puzzled expression on his face – I slipped them quickly into my notebook without the Serbs seeing. If survivors had reached Albania, they had already disappeared into the vast, stinking refugee camps. If there were still survivors inside Kosovo, they might not live through the war. So who were the people in my tiny, muddy photograph collection with their gentle, unsuspecting faces? Were they still alive? Could they one day tell us what really happened at midday on 14 April 1999, on the country road between Djakovica and Prizren? That night, in a bleak old resort hotel near Recane, I studied the pictures by torchlight.
I found I had also grabbed, along with the pictures, a blood transfusion certificate in the name of an Albanian woman, Resmije Rama. A trail of clothes and plastic bags and hats and shoes and coats lay in the ditches. This convoy must have stretched across an eighth of southern Kosovo. There had been another massacre near a village called Meja, at the back of the same massive column of human misery In all, the Serbs said 86 Albanians were killed by Nato. Months later, several Albanians would estimate the dead in their hundreds Nato never gave a figure. Some had obviously been driven into the fields in panic and abandoned there.
There had been no military vehicles in the area, a Yugoslav soldier announced. The refugees were on their way back to their homes, the Serbs said, although this seemed hard to believe. Where had they come from? Why would they be travelling on the main road towards the Macedonian border if they were going back to their villages? And why so many? All along the road, for mile after mile, there were scattered tractors and lorries and trailors. We saw the black-curtained buses carrying them from their homes, fearful faces peering at us from the windows We were watching their “ethnic cleansing” And the male Serb journalists on our buses did not care.

Paris St Germain, a multi-sports concern whose main business is football, no longer seems as interested in its rugby league wing as it was. Some of the better Paris players have already been picked off in time-honoured fashion by the much deeper pockets of French rugby union. But revolutions, as the history being celebrated this weekend will testify, do not always go smoothly. Nobody wanting a quiet or easy life should attempt to set up or sustain a rugby league club in Paris or London. It will take time for a Paris St Germain-London Broncos fixture to imprint itself on the collective mind as part of the sporting calendar, but the cities are close enough and have enough links that something can surely be built on the basis of this year’s first playing. As the sprinkling of London fans converged on the Charlety Stadium last night, with a dash of curious representatives from northern rugby league clubs thrown in among them, it seemed an event worth nurturing for the future.. “Give them a winning team and this place will really take off,” Kear believes. There are, inevitably, problems The ground, imposing as it is, costs a fortune to rent.
I can’t fault their attitude, especially the younger French players. They really want to learn and to do well.”In a qualified sort of way, Paris has already taken them to its heart. Their home at the handsome Charlety Stadium regularly produces some of the better crowds that are spread unevenly through this first season of summer rugby. If the majority of the spectators have obtained their tickets through various offers, rather than through actually paying for them, that is still a start. It’s a two- hour trip as opposed to six or seven.”.Geography has worked against Paris.
Like London, it has little rugby league activity to call its own and its players, the ones who have not been flown in from Australia or New Zealand, commute from the league heartland in the south every week. That mileage, and the fact that many of the Paris side were still also playing for their clubs in the French domestic competition, reduced them to an exhausted rabble in mid-season.But a more realistic workload, plus the decision to superimpose a high- ranking Englishman, John Kear, on to their coaching structure, might yet spare them the embarrassment of instant demotion to the First Division – or save the League the almost equal embarrassment of moving the goalposts in order to retain them in the top flight, and with them Super League’s pretensions to wider European status.Kear says: “I’m here to try and keep them up There’s no secret about that and I think that we can do it. “Tale of two villages” it is not.Of the two cities, London’s representatives have at least performed creditably on the pitch this season. The Broncos’ collection of expatriate Australians can finish in the top four if they continue their winning run, which would be a great achievement and surely an equally important step towards truly putting the code on the map in London.Tony Currie, their coach, putting the whole thing into its geographic context, says: “Coming to Paris is like a home game for us. Even if Paris St Germain, especially after the defeat they suffered at Workington last week, are struggling to keep their heads above water, although buoyed up by a Super League administration desperate to help them avoid relegation; and even if the Broncos as yet have only a tenuous grip on the sporting imagination of the British capital, it is still a long way removed from Featherstone against Keighley.
Bastille weekend, Nelson Mandela, the South African president, in Paris, the Tour de France weaving its way towards the capital and a rugby league match between two clubs trying to plant the code and make it thrive in the alien soil of two previously indifferent cities – no wonder “tale of two cities” metaphors are in demand in both countries. Paris St Germain versus the London Broncos – this was the sort of event the game was promised when it leapt into the boudoir with Rupert Murdoch 15 months ago. To be in Paris for the first visit of the team from the other capital city across the channel is to be at the heart of what Super League aspires to be.

It is hard to imagine, however, that Mr Aoshima’s opponents would resort to terrorism.Suspicion will inevitably focus on Aum Shinri Kyo, which hoarded hundreds of tons of chemical, biological and explosive ingredients in its buildings near Mt Fuji, close to where Mr Asahara was found yesterday.Police arrested the cult leader in his residence in the village, more than four hours after breaking into the building with electric cutters. The building had been searched by police several times during a seven- week investigation into the cult, but they did not know his whereabouts until recently. Electricity had been cut off, and investigators carrying torches had to force their way into the many small rooms. Mr Asahara was found in a one-metre-high compartment, concealed between the second and third floors. He was meditating alone in his purple robes and offered no resistance. He was arrested on suspicion of the murder of 12 commuters and the attempted murder of 5,500 who were poisoned in the sarin subway attack on 20 March.Mr Asahara was driven to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police (MPD) headquarters, 100km away.
Under questioning the cult leader, who is visually impaired, denied the charges. “How could I, with my bad eyes, have done such a thing?” he asked. But, despite claims by his followers that he has been ill, Mr Asahara appeared in good health When a doctor tried to take his pulse, he was brushed away “I am fine,” Mr Asahara said “Don’t touch me, please. I don’t allow even my disciples to touch me.”Dawn raids were carried out on 130 other Aum facilities and by the end of the day about half of the 41 people named in the murder warrants were in custody.
Still at large was Takeshi Matsumoto, a member of the sect’s “Intelligence Ministry”, suspected of kidnapping a cult member’s brother in February. The Japanese Prime Minister, Tomiichi Murayama, announced that the sect would be dissolved. But he warned: “They may have produced more sarin and are still concealing it We need to stay on the alert.”. Tokyo – Throughout his career, Shoko Asahara has aggressively overcome disadvantages and setbacks and shrewdly responded to the mood of the times, writes Richard Lloyd Parry. He was born in 1955 in a mountainous region of Kyushu, the southernmost of the main Japanese islands.
His real name is Chizuo Matsumoto and he was the sixth child of a maker of tatami, the rush mat which forms the floor covering of traditional Japanese homes.A congenital eye defect led to his being educated at a public boarding school for the partially sighted where he took diplomas in alternative therapies such as acupuncture.Aged 21, he set up a shop selling Chinese medicines in Chiba, the prefecture adjoining Tokyo, but was fined 200,000 yen for selling herbal remedies without a permit, and went bankrupt.
In 1984, he set up the predecessor of Aum Shinri Kyo, the “Association of Legendary Hermits with Miraculous Powers”, a yoga training organisation that published books on meditation and Eastern religion. He married and travelled in the Himalayas: it was during this time that he claims to have become enlightened. In 1989, the renamed Aum Shinri Kyo (Aum Ultimate Truth) was recognised as a religious foundation under Japanese law, entitling it to tax benefits. Early Aum dogma was based around levitation (more like vigorous bouncing in the Lotus position), and meditation practised in yoga centres where many members were recruited.Mr Asahara’s followers were encouraged to show their devotion by donating worldly goods to the cult, which began to buy property in Japan. This was the period of the so-called “Bubble” when rocketing land prices were fuelling an unprecedented expansion of the Japanese economy. From the beginning, Mr Asahara was as effective a businessman as he was a guru.As the cult grew richer, its teachings changed, becoming harsher and more ambitious. Mr Asahara began to talk about Armageddon, a war between Japan and the United States that would destroy the country between 1997 and 1999.Again, this was timely, as trade friction and the disillusion of the old Cold War certainties drove a wedge between the two states. Aum’s membership swelled quickly, and it began to make enemies. It was driven out of its Kyushu village base and, in 1989, Mr Asahara and 14 followers made a derided stand for elections to the lower house. Those setbacks were said to have angered Mr Asahara and it is at this time that he formulated the philosophy of struggle against the state, acquiring cut-price military equipment from Russia, and chemicals – supposedly for making fertilisers and other materials necessary for surviving Armageddon – but apparently for synthesising sarin nerve gas.. Fierce fighting, including at least 800 explosions and constant bursts of heavy machine-gun fire, rocked Sarajevo and the hills above yesterday as the government fought Bosnian Serb forces for control of land over- looking a vital Serb road.
It was like watching a train wreck. Or, more precisely, a Carr crash.
