Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog” dominated the pre-holiday weekend with a $25 million nationwide debut.

Earlier in the evening your generosity had been tweaked by the equally worthless cause of getting a cowpat dropped on Bianca from EastEnders.
For those given to moaning that the corporate sponsors only deliver large cheques in return for even larger name-checks, Alan Partridge was on hand, haplessly trying to whip up an air of zany carnival in an outside broadcast from Norwich. The notional goal wasn’t a water-purification plant or ploughs for Somalia, but a snog for Dawn French – if the money topped a million, Hugh Grant was going to lay down his lips for charity. “Your money makes a fantastic difference to sad people like her,” said Jennifer Saunders, urging you to meet one of the programme’s hourly fund- raising targets. It’s easy to make jokes about The Night of Comic Relief (BBC1) and fortunately most of those involved did. So if you were inclined to sit at home and split hairs about motives, they had a gag ready for you, nicely calculated to scorn those with prissy consciences.

If you want something fancier or find it’s not your thing, you won’t have spent a pile of money. The writer is a probation officer in west London.. Beyond “Dear Bruce,” I’m lost, but by the time Peter awoke the next morning his elderly computer probably contained a reply from the other side of the world. So if you fancy dipping a toe into the world of computers, don’t feel you have to part with armfuls of cash Try an XT. With the aid of a second-hand modem (£15) we could zoom around the library of Imperial College and then to Cambridge to check the latest papers As a finale we sent e-mail to his opposite number in Sydney. He uses his to construct a mathematical model of a supernova. If he paid around £6 a month to join Compuserve, he could trawl in more information than he could process.Another friend is a physics lecturer researching into black holes. The shop fitted a modem for around £50 so now he can fax them off to the Times (London or New York) from his back room. Thus I discovered I am not the only owner of a computer with a sub-£100 price-tag Dan the journalist is knocking out articles on his.

Someone gave me Zork, but once I’ve got to the loft with the lamp, the rope and the sword I can’t be bothered any more.Once I had joined the computer owners, I felt capable of asking questions of my more computer-literate friends. Or it did: the next trick is to find them again, but I kept losing figures on a 486 with Windows, too, so I’ll keep counting my change.Games I could play them, but they bore me after a couple of tries. What else? Well, I’ve put in Lotus 123, which can calculate to the penny how much (or how little) we have in the bank. I would rather avoid nasty shocks like that, but if you’re into book-keeping, or fancy calculating the present value of an ordinary annuity or a sum-of-the-years’-digits depreciation of an asset for a specified period, my XT can oblige.More usefully, its spreadsheet facility will store the total number of cases my office deals with, broken down into probation orders, people in prison, etc, and will rejig the figures when I change them. First, loaded with Letter Perfect software, it’s an efficient word-processor: if it did nothing else, this alone would justify its keep, being streets ahead of my typewriter. The 20-megabyte hard disk alone was a revolution; not long before, that sort of capacity would have required something the size of three washing machines.I set out to find what my new acquisition would do.

True, the computer revolution has moved on apace in that time but look at the XT in context. Ten years ago people were queuing up to part with a couple of thousand pounds to get their hands on this latest technology. What it can do?”"What do you want it to do?”"I don’t know; what will it do?”"But what do you want it to do?” etc, etc.I decided that if I was to buy my way into this question-and-answer routine it would be at the cheapest possible price. There is a tendency for people to be suspicious of a £69 computer, either because they are used to a faster, more modern machine or because they regard anything 10 years old as redundant. Then there are those who tell you to ignore anything so out of date as a 386: their idea of “cheap” is working your way down (but not too far) from £1,000.
Why do I want a computer? Because we have been promised them at work for longer than I care to remember and now they are actually on their way, and because I have two young children who will soon be appalled at my lack of knowledge. What do I want a computer to do? That’s a good question to ask people, mainly because most of them, like me, do not know the answer. The computer’s price does not seem to affect the typical sales-floor routine:”I am interested in this computer. The flaw here is that it only appears slow if you have the skills to go fast.

The actor and his girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, are the new parents of a daughter named Lucia.

But this has produced complaints that Mr Brown has trampled on other people’s territory and built a group of dedicated supporters around him. His chairmanship of the day-to-day news management strategy committee, and of a new weekly campaign meeting (attended by Mr Blair and members of his private office but not Mr Cook) makes friction with colleagues inevitable.Mr Cook, who is chairman of Labour’s policy forum, and is also supposed to be in charge of policy development, feels he should be consulted more. He has championed proportional representation and expressed an interest in serving in a Scottish Parliament. Mr Brown has become central to the modernising process.Mr Cook, although he covets Mr Brown’s economic portfolio, has devoted much of his energy to the constitutional agenda.

In a way Gordon’s position has been strengthened.”The enmity goes back to Edinburgh University where Mr Cook first met his younger challenger Then, at least, there was an ideological meeting of minds. The Scotsman last week disinterred a 20-year-old copy of the Red Paper on Scotland – stated objective the pursuit of “vigorous socialist policies” – edited by Mr Brown with a contribution from Mr Cook. The road from there to Mr Blair’s revisionist Shadow Cabinet has been a long one, and it has shown up their differences. Critics of Mr Brown were said to include Chris Smith, Mo Mowlam and Frank Dobson.Last week, at a meeting of the Parliamentary Party, MPs banged their desks in support of the shadow Chancellor, and later that day at a meeting of the Shadow Cabinet the Labour leader backed Mr Brown “101 per cent”. He warned that if he found out who was leaking to newspapers they would have no place in a Blair Cabinet. One source, who was careful not to blame Mr Cook, argued: “There has been an attempt to drive a wedge between Tony and Gordon and that has failed. Several members of the Shadow Cabinet felt the consultation processes had broken down.

Mr Blair ordered a news blackout which was broken within days. Mr Cook’s reservations reached one newspaper front page. Then, a week later, reports emerged of a brisk exchange at Shadow Cabinet between Messrs Cook and Brown. The principle had been trailed in a policy document published in October, but the detail infuriated some on the left. The two Scottish Labour MPs were never friends; now many see them as enemies. Both clever, both loners, there is, said one MP last week, an “almost chemical frisson” between the two which has developed over a 20-year rivalry. Brownites regard Mr Cook as “poisonous”; “never trust a man who once went on holiday to a library,” retort backers of the shadow Foreign Secretary. The latest dispute erupted over Mr Brown’s plans to remove some benefit from the young unemployed who refuse a job or training. Who would want that kind of work?Inside story, page 17Leading article, page 20.

WHEN President Clinton meets Tony Blair on Wednesday, their discussion will be of only passing interest to Labour MPs. But the question of who the Labour leader takes with him has been much more gripping for the parliamentary party. The guestlist could have included any of Mr Blair’s three most senior colleagues: Robin Cook, the shadow Foreign Secretary, Gordon Brown, the shadow Chancellor or John Prescott, the deputy leader. And, as Labour MPs know, tension among the three has never been higher.
One highly-placed source concedes with understatement: “I am not going to pretend to you that any of them go on holiday together.” A Labour MP put it more bluntly: “Cook, Brown and Prescott, can’t stand being in the same room together.” Fortunate, perhaps, that only Mr Cook will be accompanying Mr Blair to the American ambassador’s London residence.Last week in a Commons debate the Chancellor Kenneth Clarke sought to exploit the semi-public row between Mr Brown and Mr Cook. Seasons will go by outside Mr Wansell’s Wiltshire home, and still there will be Fred, talking Forget the money. He has a year to write the book, a year spent among transcripts and records of the foulest kind, listening, as he said, to “Fred’s” voice on those hours of tapes.

Or it was until he began to be inundated with calls for another business, owned by Pearson, the conglomerate that owns the Financial Times and Royal Doulton among others. Eventually, Calderini received an offer that he could not refuse and sold out. Which was when he set up his new company, renting mobile phones to business executives travelling across Europe.
Europe on Line isn’t going to make it into the FT-SE 100, with profits of only £100,000 a year, but it is Calderini’s livelihood. He won it for having set up a pasta factory, selling fresh pasta to the catering industry and to supermarkets. Catching the 1980s taste for better food, the company did well. The founder, who was born in Assisi but is half English, won the Independent Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in 1988 at the age of 26 and so is clearly a man of some distinction. Take the example of Europe on Line, a mobile phone rental company set up five years ago by Giancarlo Calderini.

Characteristically, he shares much of the credit with his team of managers.Over the next 12 weeks McAdam will find it harder to hide behind the faade of teamwork. Persuading shareholders to stay with his management will involve personal salesmanship. Whether he likes it or not, McAdam will be the man in the limelight for a while yet.. WHAT’S in a name? Just about everything if you are a small business up against a giant that wants to use your name for one of its own operations.

In all, a quarter of the company’s outlets have been closed or sold in the battle to return it to profitability. Within a year he had sold Watches of Switzerland for £23.5m, negotiated a standstill agreement with the group’s banks and boosted profit margins sharply. McAdam had managed to wrap his thick Scottish burr around the Spanish language.”We mixed with the local community as much as the expats,” he said. “During our four years in Kerala, in tropical south- west India, that was more difficult.” The family lived in a company compound in the rainforest, he recalls. “The children rode on elephants, but I didn’t.”After his return to Britain in 1970, McAdam helped to restructure Coats Patons, selling its Scottish Woollens shops, and later, as chief executive of the group, led it into the merger with Vantona Viyella.Since moving to Signet after his retirement in 1991, McAdam has been just as busy.

Three years later it was on to Portugal, where he spent six months, then to Chile for another seven years. One of the couple’s daughters was born in Santiago, and McAdam still has fond memories of taking his family horse- riding in the hills above the city. The family then moved to India, where cultural differences became more challenging. The main opportunity came when I moved on to the financial side when I was 16.

He used night school to bolster his limited formal education, and rose steadily through the ranks “J&P Coats had a reputation for training its own people.
