Seventeen years ago, when I was 19 and living in South Africa, I took a very thorough secretarial course which included speech and deportment. It stood me in good stead, for although I’ve had opportunities to work in other areas of publishing I prefer to remain a career PA. I moved to Random House from Collins with my boss of the time about nine-and-a-half years ago. Then in 1991 I put my career on the back burner to have children. By 1993 I was ready to take on a more challenging position again and when Gail Rebuck’s PA resigned I took the opportunity of taking her place, becoming PA to one of the most important people in publishing. Gail sat me down straight away and went through how she liked to work.

I think it is essential to do this with a new boss because no two bosses work the same way. Gail runs the organisation, which includes 32 imprints, so my job requires a high level of organisation, swift prioritising and attention to detail. If you get something wrong at this level the consequences are much more disastrous. Gail is also responsible for our overseas companies and distribution warehouse so the total amount of paperwork and correspondence is huge. But Gail replies to her own e-mails, which frees me up a little. I love the Internet and the instant communication it allows, it cuts down on the paperwork whilst giving me the responsibility that I want and it means that I can help Gail with things such as her computerised slide- show presentations. I used to train my colleagues to be IT friendly because technology reduces the mundane tasks and makes everything more efficient.
My job is quite pressurised, and Gail spends much of the day in meetings so we have to grab time in between.

I don’t attend meetings because that’s when I can get down to work, but I do have to make sure she’s taking the right stuff with her without being asked for it first. When people telephone I need to be able to deal with things rather than just take a message, so Gail will brief me on the issues she’s involved with, which means I learn a lot, too. If Gail is being invited to a lunch I will try to find out the format and who else is coming, anticipating the questions that she would ask. This does annoy some people and I probably do have a reputation throughout the building for being tough but I need to be firm to be efficient. When a new person joins she often gets sent to me for advice or information – everyone knows me here because I have been here for so long.Our hours are officially 9.30 am to 5.30 pm with an hour for lunch, but Gail and I both try to get in for 9 am in order to leave on time. Gail has young children, too and has always made a point of not working too late, which makes life easier for me because she understands that I have a personal life.

But I do know what it’s like to be in a school that’s on the ropes.

Anyone who can turn round a school where interludes like that have become part of the culture, certainly deserves to be respected – and well paid.But last week’s news that Mr Murphy – who made laudable improvements at the Hurlingham and Chelsea School – is to receive £90,000 a year to tackle Crown Woods draws us up short. We shall soon have the hundred thou’ head – and even then, say independent management consultants, they ought to get £20,000 more, along with a performance-related bonus.The salaries of frontline teachers, meanwhile – without whom no school can even operate, let alone flourish – bump along at the bottom.If heads are to be paid twice or even thrice the salaries they earned two years ago, then either something was wrong then, something is wrong now, or something big must have altered in the meanwhile.One thing that has changed in the past few years is that we have become more aware of the kind and scale of pressurefaced by heads of tough schools. We all remember television footage of the Ridings School in Halifax, where youngsters, when not rioting or vandalising, were making V-signs to the cameras behind the back of the head teacher.

Pupils at Crown Woods will no doubt come to be grateful to him for statistically improving their life chances.It’s just a shame that when figures – whether they relate to pounds and pence or GCSE passes – are the only measure of success that matters, a lot that is important gets lost. Schools from which it is difficult to turn out statistics proving that they conform to the contemporary definition of success have to offer ever higher salaries to encourage heads to take on the real risk of failure. Their underpaid teachers, meanwhile – who have to put their reforms into effect – have to work harder, and just hope for the best. Salaries of £100,000 and more might not be too much for some of today’s heads, but it might well be a sign that we are expecting too much from our schools altogether.. IT WAS Wednesday night at the Young Couples Club in Le Mat district on the outskirts of Hanoi, and a small bush had been placed in a flowerpot on the floor of the hall, its branches decked out with flashing lights and flowers made from metallic paper. A young woman was picked from the audience, handed the microphone and told to choose from the flowers, among whose petals were pinned questions designed to test the nerves of the most robust public speaker.

Disney’s 3-D juggernaut “Alice in Wonderland” continues to surpass expectations, beating out ‘Bounty Hunter’ and ‘Wimpy Kid.’

When Fox aired a sneak-peek episode of its new series “Glee” four months before the show actually premiered, it took a big chance that the audience would still care. The risk seems to have paid off.
