Police investigating the theft of a pensioner’s body from a graveyard have discovered remains buried in woodland that are believed to be her. “There were no jobs, no work, we were intending to take goods to sell them to support our families,” he said.Mr Hanon acknowledged that he had been told at the British military headquarters at Basra airport and another British base at Shaiba that there was a “good possibility” of receiving compensation for what he had undergone while in British custody. But he insisted that he had gone to make a statement to the British authorities along with Mr Karheem’s uncle purely to record what had happened “I was telling the truth,” he said. The hearing continues.. “There was bombing by Bush at the time, there was a curfew, we could not work. It was a catastrophe, we were very hungry, it [stealing] was wrong, but we had no other option”.Mr Hanon told the court that he and the others were in the process of stealing from a garage when he was arrested by a combined British and Iraqi patrol.
He was supporting his family, he said, on the equivalent of 15 pence a day. “We were beaten by fists, by feet, and kicked all the way to the hospital.”Cross-examined by Richard Lissack QC on behalf of L/Cpl Cooke, Mr Hanon admitted theft. “I was hit once and I fell on the floor, and then a soldier dragged me. There were four of them, we were four and each was taking one of us”, he said. He described how he was punched in the eye and dragged along the ground by British soldiers, injuring his arm and knee. One of the guardsmen had momentarily made a move to try to save the drowning boy, but was waved away by the others, he said.Sgt Carle Selman, 39, then of the Coldstream Guards and now serving with the Scots Guards; L/Cpl James Cooke, 22; Guardsman Joseph McCleary, 24; and Guardsman Martin McGing, 22, all of the Irish Guards, all deny the manslaughter of Mr Karheem on 8 May 2003 in Basra, following the invasion of Iraq earlier that year. After being arrested, the four Iraqis were first taken to Basra general hospital, before being taken to the canal.Mr Hanon, a welder, claimed that the soldiers repeatedly assaulted him. There was nothing I could do because I could not swim well.”The soldiers – four guardsmen – had thrown stones at the four Iraqis to make them enter the Shatt al-Basra canal, Mr Hanon told the hearing at Colchester barracks in Essex.
He said he climbed back to shore after his captors drove away in their Warrior armoured vehicle. Both arms were stretched out of the water, but there was no sound from him Then he vanished. He [Ahmed] just raised his hand but then he was under the water and then he raised them again. Speaking publicly for the first time about the death of Ahmed Jabar Karheem, the witness, Aiad Salim Hanon, said he was repeatedly punched and kicked by the soldiers after being arrested as a suspected looter along with three other Iraqis.
Mr Hanon, 25, who appeared in court in a blue and white striped shirt and jeans, described how Ahmed, who could not swim and also suffered from asthma, desperately tried to stop himself being swept away by the tide.”There was mud beneath our feet, it was slippery There was a tide.
A young Iraqi told a court martial how he could do nothing to save his 15-year-old companion from drowning after both of them were allegedly beaten and forced into a canal by British soldiers who were throwing stones. A Humberside Police spokeswoman said all five men were in custody at police stations in Hull and will be interviewed later.. Police said the victim was dragged into a car by two men and taken to an address in the city’s New Michael Street where she suffered a serious sexual assault overnight and left the following morning. The four other men, aged 19, 25, 29 and 32, were arrested during last night’s operation on suspicion of assisting an offender. Asmar was also arrested in connection with an alleged sexual assault against a 15-year-old girl from Hull. Hull North MP Diana Johnson has promised to investigate the case. Asmar was arrested on suspicion of a serious assault on a man in Hull on Good Friday, the force spokeswoman said.
The 38-year-old victim was found with stab injuries on Beverley Road in the city and needed emergency surgery. The Home Office said it could not comment on whether 25-year-old Asmar was on the list of foreign criminals who should have been considered for deportation following their release from prison. Caliph Ali Asmar was arrested during a search of an address in central Hull at around 10.30pm last night.
A Humberside Police spokeswoman said he was arrested with four other men as a result of a call from a member of the public who saw the appeals for assistance through the media. An Iraqi Kurd wanted over the attempted murder of a man and a sex attack on a teenage girl that occurred after he was recommended for deportation has been arrested, police said today. And it took a mass campaign led by the writers’ rights group English Pen, and the comedian Rowan Atkinson – as well as a Commons rebellion – to block a new law that would have made it illegal to make remarks that might incite religious hatred.. Though aimed at Islamic extremists, it could apply to dissidents who want to see dictators such as Robert Mugabe overthrown.
“Number nine. Number nine. Number nine.” The words from “Revolution 9″ are more prescient than the Beatles could have realized: On September 9, 2009 — 9/9/09 — the band’s remastered CDs and “The Beatles: Rock Band” will come out. But will the audience follow?
A NEW United Nations resolution intended to ease tensions with Iraq appeared last night to be having the opposite effect as Baghdad angrily rejected it and spoke ominously of “facing the consequences” of its defiance. Drafted by Britain, the resolution holding out the promise of an end to economic sanctions against Baghdad was passed by the UN Security Council on Friday. It demands that UN inspectors be allowed back into Iraq, after a one-year absence, to search for weapons of mass destruction, but offers the suspension of sanctions within a year if Iraq co-operates.
Divisions in the Council on the best way to handle Saddam Hussein remain barely disguised, however. The reporters have gone from in front of the palace, the TV choppers are back at their helipads.
Whatever is really going on, the subject has dropped abruptly out of the news, which may turn out to be no bad thing. As Princess Masako’s mother told doorstepping journalists: “I have heard nothing myself, but it if it turns out not to be true I will feel very sorry for my daughter.”. On being asked about the story, he urged his people to “wait quietly”, but admitted that “if [it] is true, it is a cause for celebration”. The agency, it is speculated, is furious, and is allowing him and his friends at the Asahi to stew for a while.Palace officials have promised further “appropriate tests at an appropriate time”. In the traditional Buddhist calendar Monday was an inauspicious day, inappropriate for big announcements. But wilder rumours, retailed in private by Japanese journalists last week, concern the possibility that something has gone wrong – a miscarriage, perhaps, or even a birth defect, possibly as a side-effect of fertility treatment.Another line of thinking has it that the story originated in the office of Japan’s Prime Minister, Keizo Obuchi, who leaked it to provide some relief from bad news about Japan’s struggling economy.
Every year, the Crown Prince gives a press conference on his birthday, and every year the issue is raised. “I am afraid too much disturbance could upset the stork’s mood,” he said in 1994 This year, he was earnest. “I fully recognise people’s interest in this, and the importance of the matter,” he said. One theory has it that the Imperial Household Agency, which controls every aspect of the Imperial lives, is simply trying to cool things down with the intention of confirming the pregnancy when the Crown Princess has passed the vulnerable eight-week stage. All royal brides are under pressure to produce heirs, but Princess Masako, a former diplomat, educated at Harvard and Oxford, has suffered more than most. For a start, she has married into a family with an acute shortage of men: the Crown Prince’s younger brother is the youngest male in the family, and he is 34.Under current succession laws, and despite several historical Empresses, women cannot succeed to the throne. A urine test had indicated that she was expecting – even Mr Furukawa admitted “other medical symptoms which indicate she may be pregnant”.Last Monday she had ultrasound tests, which for a woman five weeks pregnant should have provided confirmation. Why, then, the reluctance to make an announcement one way or the other? The Tokyo rumour machine has not been slow in supplying theories, for there is a lot at stake, and not just for the Japanese media.
“At present,” he said, “we are not at a stage where we can announce whether or not the Crown Princess is pregnant.”Japan’s Imperial “millennium baby” had disappeared before our eyes, and nobody understands why. The story, based on leaks from unnamed officials in the Imperial Palace, seems to have been accurate – after six years of marriage, 36-year-old Princess Masako appeared to have good news. Finally, Kiyoshi Furukawa, Grand Master of the Crown Prince’s Household, appeared. After sternly calling for journalists to respect “the human rights” of the couple, he made his announcement, the worst news of all in such a situation. But the weekend passed with nothing new to report, and by Monday, the media were getting edgy.
Cameramen in helicopters strained for a glimpse of the couple as they travelled to the hospital, and floor plans were displayed showing the route they would take to the examining room. Princess Masako, wife of Japan’s Crown Prince Naruhito, was pregnant after six years of marriage.

Mrs Gorman, the MP for Billericay, who had the Tory whip withdrawn by Mr Major for her attacks on his policy on Europe, said she wanted to seek new challenges outside Parliament. Lawyers for the newspaper said that they had a fully signed statement from Mr Baker’s friend. Terence Baker, a theatrical agent who died in 1991, reportedly told the friend that he had lied when he said Lord Archer gave him a lift home after a dinner date. James Irwin, who had bought the rights, applied for an injunction to halt the story, but backed down when the newspaper said it would contest the claim. The report follows the peer’s admission last week that he persuaded another friend, Ted Francis, to lie about his whereabouts on the night after he is alleged to have met Ms Coghlan. The Stacpoole allegations came as the Daily Star claimed that a key witness in the libel trial had confessed to a friend that he lied in court. Mr Stacpoole had signed away for a token pounds 1 all publication rights to anything he might say about his former friend. Mr Stacpoole, 61, also claimed that Lord Archer rewarded a witness, Terence Baker, by allowing him to sell his novels’ television rights, and that he had a five-year affair with his assistant, Andrina Colquhoun.”My evidence under cross-examination would have blown his case apart and he knew it … I think that over many, many instances now he has not only let his wife and his children down but he has let his friends down, he has let me down and it’s time really to tell the truth,” he said.Mr Stacpoole’s comments in the Mail on Sunday followed an attempt by an American business friend of Lord Archer’s to prevent publication of the story.
FRESH ALLEGATIONS about Lord Archer of Weston-super-Mare are to be passed to Scotland Yard following reports yesterday that he paid a friend pounds 40,000 to leave the country during his libel trial 13 years ago. The new claims about the millionaire novelist’s conduct are also likely to be studied by the Conservative Party’s ethics and integrity committee, which is due to begin taking evidence this week.
A spokesman for the former Tory candidate for mayor of London dismissed the stories and called for him to be given “some space” by the media. In yet another day of intense speculation about Lord Archer’s future, two newspapers claimed to have new evidence about his libel case against the Daily Star in 1987.Michael Stacpoole, a former friend and confidant of the Tory peer, said that he would return to London from his home in Thailand to help Scotland Yard pursue its investigations.Mr Stacpoole, who was sent by Lord Archer to pay pounds 2,000 to a prostitute, Monica Coghlan, claimed that he had been paid pounds 40,000 to prevent him giving evidence to the libel trial. The jury backed Lord Archer’s case that he had never slept with Ms Coghlan and ordered the Daily Star to pay pounds 500,000 in damages. After the story broke Mr Stacpoole says that Mr Archer paid him pounds 24,000 to leave the country so he could not be called as a witness. He went to Paris, only returning to support Spurs, and was financially supported by Mr Archer for some time. MrStacpoole later moved to Ostend, Belgium where he bought the lease of a nightclub called the Bunny Bar, moving to Thailand shortly after.. He takes credit for the “shepherd’s pie and champagne” parties that made Lord Archer a London social figure. Mr Stacpoole was a slighty sleazy figure and he and Mr Archer became drinking partners often at less than salubrious London watering holes.
Mr Stacpoole was to become Mr Archer’s fixer and confidant for more than 15 years.
He was the man entrusted to deliver an envelope of cash from Mr Archer to Monica Coghlan, which prompted the infamous libel trial. MICHAEL STACPOOLE, 61, first met Lord Archer in 1970 when Mr Archer, as he was then, was organising charity concerts Mr Stacpoole’s talent was for thinking up publicity wheezes. I get the impression he’s always genuinely pleased to see everyone. There are never any people from the entertainment world there and it’s very low- key. Again, it’s run by a great character, Tony, who is friendly and not over the top. Everything is done with genuine enthusiasm.Another favourite refuge of mine is La Meridiana (East Horsley, 01483 284343), an Italian restaurant near my home in Surrey. It sounds strange for an image-maker to say, but I like people to be themselves. Mei-Li is a young person who’s taken a gamble, worked hard and studies her customers. Some are so patronising and sickly to people who are well-known, and then rude about them behind their backs I’ve seen enough of that I know there has to be showbiz, but I much prefer reality.
My favourite dish has to be the Fillet of Beef with Shiitake Mushrooms, spicy sauce and crispy seaweed.
Apart from good food, a restaurant has to have an individual quality, real character and sincerity. Pacific Spice is the latest, and they just keep getting better and better. The restaurant is run by a woman called Mei-Li Tan, who set up a chain of restaurants called Silks and Spices six years ago. I like to be seduced by a flavour, not have it blow my head off. I love the indulgence of eating out, and having a wide choice of food. My tastes vary, so I like to be able to tailor food to my mood.
Pacific Spice (42 Northampton Road, London EC1, 0171 278 9983) is one of my favourite places. The flavours are as subtle or as spicy as you want them to be, but they are never overbearing. Thursdays are always fish-and-chip nights for my family, but on Fridays and Saturdays it’s different restaurants. I’M A CREATURE of habit who likes variation, although that might sound like a contradiction. Still, if you do happen to end up sitting in the dining room of the Royal George, can I recommend that you skip straight from the starters to the one really good dish of our meal – the excellent bread-and-butter pudding that is made, apparently, to mine host’s mother’s recipe Thank heavens for small mercies..
What puzzles and dismays me most about the Royal George is how a restaurateur can take such pride in the quality and freshness of his star ingredient, and then let it be ruined with careless, thoughtless cooking. Nor would it demand an inordinate amount of skill, and what’s more, it might be even quicker to prepare and serve.Well, what did I expect? It is all too easy to wax lyrical about how restaurant cooking in Great Britain has improved beyond all recognition, and indeed it has in some areas, but it is just not so in many parts of the country. The overcooked flesh is woolly, and would be dry were it not for the grease. Why? Why does it have to be like this? What’s wrong with cooking the fish un- der the grill just as it is, in the buff, brushed lightly with a neutral oil, until just cooked through? Or flash-frying it for a few brief moments, dipped lightly in a little flour seasoned with nothing more exotic than salt and pepper? Surely it wouldn’t push prices up. Drenched in fat, blackened and blistered here and there, what might well have been a glistening, bright-eyed fish a few hours ago is now completely ruined. Despite being supposedly grilled, each portion is enclosed in a thick brown coating, seasoned, I imagine, with some proprietary seasoning mix, or now that I think about it, the whole lot probably comes ready-mixed. Whatever it is, it does nothing for the delicate flavour of fresh fish More than that, it overwhelms it.
Ken Clarke, however, is widely admired in the UK both for his natural charm and for his time as Chancellor. He would be a refreshing and serious combatant to the flashy Tony Blair. Do the Conservatives care about power or are they content to let the party dissolve into right-wing think-tanks?
TOM KENYON-SLANEYLondon W6. These are just some people employed in professions which involve a good deal more stress, effort and/or unpleasantness than being a Whitehall civil servant, for a good deal less money How “reasonable” is that?SIMON LAWTON SMITHLondon SE13. Sir: There is a choice for the Conservative Party.
A first-class degree from Oxford, as Mr Barraclough implies, is helpful if all this is to be done efficiently and effectively.
Take nurses, junior hospital doctors, agricultural workers, teachers, miners, sewerage workers and social workers. This is for a job which (I speak from experience) largely involves sitting at a desk; checking drafts of junior officers’ reports, letters and briefing; going to meetings; ploughing through reams of paper; defending policies you may or may not believe in; and, occasionally, having to calm down a bolshy senior colleague or minister. Whether a job is reasonably paid depends on the nature of the job. What do Whitehall civil servants do? If his son is, as Mr Barraclough describes him, a “senior” civil servant, he must be earning something between pounds 40,000 and pounds 60,000. He makes the mistake of comparing the pay between his one civil servant and three private-sector sons in order to judge what is “reasonable”. Sir: Paul Barraclough’s letter (9 June) is wrong-headed.
I’m wary of confrontation on the set; I always try to create a good working atmosphere and defuse difficult situations.I learnt a lot from Kevin Whately, when I worked as his number two man in Peak Practice He never let his worries show on the floor. So if you have had this many throat infections it might be worth having your tonsils out – if you can afford the time off school and you think that the operation is not as bad as two throat infections.Given the lack of evidence to support the enthusiasm with which ENT surgeons advocate this operation, it is difficult to agree with the suggestion that “the pendulum has swung too far”.TOM MARSHALLSpecialist Registrar in Public Health MedicineNorthamptonshire Health Authority. They did not take less time off school and children on average take one or two weeks off to recover from the operation. To even be considered for tonsillectomy in this trial, children had to have suffered from seven fairly severe throat infections in one year, or five a year for two successive years or three a year for three successive years. Your article correctly identifies the one reasonably well-designed study which showed that children who had their tonsils out had fewer throat infections in the next two years.
However, on average, the children had two fewer “moderate or severe” throat infections in the next two years.
The European Commission’s proposals should be challenged by writing to MEPs.SAM CLARKEOxford. Sir: Your article about tonsillectomy (“When pain is hard to swallow”, 3 June) might benefit from an overview of the research evidence. For an operation that has been carried out for over 2,500 years there is pitifully little decent evidence that it is effective. There have been no studies which show that tonsillectomy reduces throat infection in children over 15 or in adults.
Even the Serbian Orthodox Church in London was set up with the help of Lady Paget, wife of the British ambassador to Belgrade, at the end of the Second World War for the Chetniks (Royalists) who fled Yugoslavia after General Tito’s Communists took power.
But that was then And this is now. And while all ethnic groups in the former Yugoslavia are today swimming in blood, Serbs are judged the most monstrous. Transmutation from courageous allies to butchering Nazis is ironic when so many were killed in the Second World War by the Croats, who were allied with Hitler. The descent into despised race has been traumatic for Serbs in the former Yugoslavia. Such was the admiration they inspired, Scottish nurses who went to the Balkans to treat the wounded ditched their uniforms to take up Serb arms. “And what did the British press write in the First World War about the Serbs?” he asks, as the men around him nod, and sip sljivovica (plum brandy) from small, thick glasses “I’ll tell you .. it was all in the superlative.”
Ah, those were the days In that war the Serbs were British allies. “Italian quality is just fantastic and half the price of that in England,” says Fionda. In just three weeks, London Fashion Week kicks off and Pearce Fionda will present their line for autumn/winter 99/2000. It’s practically a couture service.”Although Pearce Fionda say they are far from being a fully fledged business, they are now well on their way. “Doing Debenhams has liberated us to do what we want for the main line,” the pair state.
Since then, every collection, from their evening dresses, swim- and cruisewear to the most recent ventures into shoes and sunglasses for Debenhams, has been a winner. The contract has benefited everyone, allowing the designers freedom to let their creative and perfectionist streaks run wild on their own line, and giving women who would not normally be able to afford Pearce Fionda a taste of glamour. The Pearce II Fionda line, launched exclusively for the store, gave the pair a bigger audience than they ever knew existed. In 1996, despite their impressive awards, Pearce Fionda were considering throwing in the towel. Cashflow problems were making it almost impossible to continue. But at the eleventh hour, a lucrative deal with Debenhams – which had the foresight to see the designers’ potential in the wider market – saved them from the abyss. The following year, they travelled to Istanbul to be presented with the title of Young Designers of the World. But the journey from fledgling to serious designers has not been without its struggles.
In 1995 Pearce Fionda won the Lloyds Bank Fashion Awards New Generation prize, with the bonus of sponsorship to stage a catwalk show at London Fashion Week. From the start, the pair offered a different stance to the other, often self-consciously avant-garde, young designers. They set out to make wearable clothes, rather than clothes that would make a statement. After graduating from the MA degree at Central St Martins, Pearce worked with John Galliano in Paris and Roland Klein in London, while Fionda, who graduated from the RCA, was employed on a commercial collection in Hong Kong.Their debut as Pearce Fionda coincided with the explosion of new talent in London in the early Nineties. After selling our collection the first time, she realised that there were a hell of a lot of potential customers out there who want daywear who we just weren’t catering for.”Andrew Fionda and Ren Pearce met on the fashion degree course at Trent Polytechnic. These are the sorts of pieces normally associated with American designers such as Calvin Klein or Donna Karan. They have been designed to make your life easier and smarter.
On the Twentieth Century Fox lot in Los Angeles, the lobby of the Steven Bochco Building is crammed with little old ladies and fat men in beards, all waiting to audition for a couple of bit parts in Bochco’s NYPD Blue I am waiting to meet Bochco’s latest leading man. Most actors who crave a role in a Bochco TV show – and, given that his hits include both LA Law and Hill Street Blues, as well as NYPD Blue, that, in America, means most actors (full stop) – have to present their credentials at the Steven Bochco Building in person But not Anthony LaPaglia Bochco went to woo him. Yet, even when he was offered the role of successor to Daniel Benzali’s bald bruiser of a defending attorney in the second series of the literally (at 23 episodes) long-running legal drama Murder One, LaPaglia played hard to get.
Not that he wasn’t flattered to be offered the part, but he wasn’t keen to leave New York, even for LA, and refused to sign the standard five- year contract. Eventually, though – after talking it through with his close friend Stanley Tucci, the weaselly Richard Cross from the first series of Murder One – he did agree to sign up for two years. So who is he, this 36-year-old actor who can afford to play so hard to get with one of the most powerful players in all American TV?Dark and intense-looking, with eyes possibly a little too close together to make him a conventional hunk, LaPaglia was brought up in Australia, and only left for America in 1984 on realising, at the age of 24, that he wasn’t going to make it as a professional soccer player. But he’d done a bit of acting part-time, and quickly made his mark on the New York stage and began to branch out into movies. “Those of us who make television series,” Bochco has said, “have been chasing this guy for years.
We all know how special he is.”It was the 1990 film Betsy’s Wedding, in which LaPaglia played a mobster – and stood head and cashmere shoulders above everyone else in the cast – that really brought him to Bochco’s attention. Yet it was to Alan Alda, who directed that movie, that Bochco had first turned when looking to replace the temperamental Daniel Benzali as Murder One’s second-run lead. “We assumed,” Bochco admits, “that, as in years past, Lapaglia wouldn’t be interested. We decided to take another chance.”So what was it about LaPaglia that made him first choice? Not just the fact that he met Bochco’s preference for avoiding familiar facess. LaPaglia, Bochco felt, would also bring a dimension or two to Murder One that Benzali lacked. Hair, for starters – plus the same kind of smouldering intensity that David Caruso, as saintly Detective John Kelly, brought to NYPD Blue.Sure enough, when Murder One (Mark II) went out in the States, LaPaglia’s powerful performance as uncompromising attorney James Wyler scored highly with the critics.
Yet, despite the actor’s undoubted charisma and sex appeal, Bochco’s Midas touch and the glowing reviews, series two has bombed in America just as series one did.Things may be different here. Southampton Benali, Magilton.Man of the match: Lundekvam.Attendance: 25,134.. Substitutes not used: Allen, Moore, O’Neill, Fettis (gk).Southampton (4-3-1-2): Taylor; Van Gobbel, Dodd, Lundekvam, Benali; Oakley (Neilsen, 80), Magilton, Slater; Berkovitch (Maddison, 90); Ostenstad, Le Tissier (Evans, 68) Substitutes not used: Dryden, Beasant (gk).Referee: A Wilkie (Chester-Le-Street) Bookings: Nottingham Forest Van Hooijdonk. They don’t lose their jobs.”Goals: Magilton (7) 0-1; Evans (85) 0-2; Pearce (pen, 88) 1-2; Evans (90) 1-3.Nottingham Forest (4-4-2): Crossley; Lyttle, Chettle, Cooper, Pearce; Phillips, Haland, Gemmill, Woan (Roy, 57); Saunders, Van Hooijdonk. It seems odd that this tactic is apparently decided by Pearce, not Bassett, who says team selection and tactics are nothing to do with him.If that sounded like buck-passing, Bassett’s comments on the team were more forthright “Some of them did not seem to be with it,” he said “We needed more blood and guts. Mark Crossley, unsighted and off-balance, was immobile.Forest’s response was long balls aimed at Van Hooijdonk, a betrayal of their traditions.
Pearce suffered more cruelly, his backpass allowed Southampton their clinching second goal. That was scored by Mike Evans, who then added a third to end revivalist thoughts prompted by Pearce’s penalty. Even Pearce and Le Tissier made mistakes in basic ball control Le Tissier, who faded badly, was substituted. Each club is on the verge of solving individual problems – Southampton are moving from their limited ground, Forest have changed their limiting constitution – but it will be too late if they are relegated. The tension showed in the play. Every Premiership club now has at least one star player which has not always been the case in the past decade. There is one catch: all this only applies to clubs in the Premiership, which is why Saturday’s match was so important and why Bassett was so unhappy with some of his players.

A return to honesty in sentencing, he promised: “Five years should mean five years.” And “those convicted for the second time of violent crime will get life.” Even this announcement was not enough for one delegate, an elderly, white-haired woman who bawled “No, no, string ‘em up.” Those boisterous young Tories: I blame the parents.. There they were hoping for the rope, and got a quango.Fortunately for the length of his ovation, Howard pulled it round at the end, pushing his glasses up on to the bridge of his nose to prove he was about to get tough. “I today announce,” he finally said, to a hall-wide intake of breath, “the creation of the Crime Prevention Agency”. His first speech as Home Secretary had included 27 new proposals, but here, for the kind of red-toothed Tory who believes judges are dangerous liberals, there were worrying moments of spineless indecision: waffle about stopping racial attacks, fashionable nonsense about identifying children at risk and helping them.
And that was just around the chin.More old friends appeared in the afternoon: law, order and Norman Tebbit. The annual Home Affairs debate is the time that Tory mouths traditionally produce enough foam to keep one of Jack Straw’s squeegee merchants’ bucket full for a month. But this year, it seemed a more muted affair: it took 45 minutes before the first delegate demanded the return of capital punishment.Michael Howard – the man who should long ago have been committed for crimes against the letter “L” – started slowly too. “In the last year we have grown faster than any other country he Europe,” he yelped in triumph at one point. The portly Mr Clarke sweated because his deficit grows ever bigger, his stomach breaking the restraints of his double-breasted suit to rest, comfortably, on the lectern. Other parts, however, mainly those housing Leon Brittan, could barely bring themselves to clap.It was a shrewd move by Kenneth Clarke to invite Lady Thatcher to share his platform.
Potentially the least popular speaker of the week, he basked in her reflected glory and shone. Mainly from the upper lip, as it happens; the lights unforgivingly catching the sweat building on his face. It wasn’t youth that got it back on to full throaty, stamping adolescent form. It was the return of old times, old values, old Lady Thatcher.
Her ladyship arrived on stage for the economics debate, her appearance provoking, in parts of the hall, an ovation which shot past the orgasmic. At the risk of sounding unduly cynical, I’m not sure if, as an achievement, going to law school to learn the intricacies of chargeable time opportunities quite matches breaking the world 800-metres record. The conference clearly agreed. Taking a microphone, he patrolled the conference hall picking out youngsters.
“And what do you do?” he asked them, like a royal on walkabout “I’m training to be a solicitor,” said one “Well done,” he replied. Coe, the runner who defied Mrs Thatcher to gain his first gold medal at Moscow, said he was going to introduce us to some young Tories whose achievements, he claimed, in their own way were equal to his.

The problem was that the football fans had gone by the time Ganguly came out to bat Not that it mattered. The new man was out without scoring after just six balls, gloving Andrew Harris to the Nottinghamshire captain, Jason Gallian, at slip. It was just as well that Lancashire had another five one-day international batsmen in their top six.As Ganguly might agree, it was not a great day for batting.
