His car crashes into the central barrier and bursts into flames. But Mark Barton’s killing spree was just the eye-catching headline to yet another murderous day in the United States of America. Here is a sampling of shooting deaths in the 48 hours between Tuesday evening, when Barton, police say, ended his wife’s life with a hammer and Thursday evening, when he committed suicide in his car at a suburban Atlanta garage.

At 39, he’s the same age as the heroine at the end of the play, but he looks a good deal younger.Sweet-faced under a mane of curly black hair and laced into lovely low- cut period dresses whose bodices give him the seductive hint of a cleavage, Rylance’s Cleopatra gambols and twirls about barefoot in a dizzy demonstration of girlish guilelessness like some young heroine from a pastoral.Rylance, one second, maternally stroking a messengers hand; the next, biting lumps off it like a spoilt child, reacts with a disarmingly instinctual swiftness, moment by moment, that increases the comedy by blurring the line between the calculated and the compulsive.There’s also the strain of delicacy and touching sensitivity in this Cleopatra as is shown by a telling detail in the final scene.True to the spirit of a play which has to keep struggling against farce as it moves towards tragic dignity, the clown who brings the poisonous asps here forgets court protocol and parks himself familiarly on the throne where the suicidal monarch is just about to turn herself into an icon.Her wig now removed, revealing a cropped-scalp riddles with alopecia Rylance’s Cleopatra stoops and, in an oddly Christ-like gesture, kisses the clown’s filthy feet before dismissing him.It’s a pity that Paul Shelley’s Antony remains, when dying and hoisted by ropes up to the central gallery, more the kind of brisk efficient type who would run a self-help group than a hero who would let himself go – even for the love of such a delectable Cleopatra as this one.. Originally, these lines would have carried a certain irony, for in Shakespeare’s time, the role would have been played by a young male actor.

But in a landmark ruling last month at Southwark Crown Court in London Judge Christopher Hardy rejected defence submissions that publication had occurred outside British jurisdiction.The judge said he was satisfied publication took place not only when the material was transmitted by Waddon, but that it was also going on when it was downloaded by police in London.He also rejected defence claims that the pornography in the case was not admissible evidence.Waddon admitted 11 sample counts of publishing obscene articles on the Internet on or before June 1997. McArthur Jones was released on bail and flew to Miami where he was immediately arrested by US customs on a separate charge after being tipped off by Scotland Yard.Last November he was given 23 months’ jail for putting child pornography on a commercial Internet site.

McArthur-Jones bought a BMW convertible, a Jaguar and a Range Rover. At the time, he was supposed to be on sick leave from the Fire Service, suffering from a bad back.The two men were enjoying a break in a plush Spanish villa in September 1997 when officers searched Waddon’s home, his father’s address in Worcester Park, south London and McArthur-Jones’s house in Ealing, west London.The pair were arrested when they returned to Britain. The sites built up a world-wide customer base that was thousands strong.The couple first came to the attention of Scotland Yard’s Obscene Publications Unit in 1997. At one stage, one site alone was making pounds 4,500 a day.During the past three years hundreds of thousands of photographs have been published. Pornographic pictures already on the Internet were repackaged onto 12 adult porn sites with titles such as Farmsex, Europerv and Schoolgirls-R’us. Sex with animals, torture, and other vile activities were available for pounds 20 a month.And both are suspected of still earning tens of thousands of pounds from the obscene pictures which remain available on the Internet.

They now talk about their “careers”.Even so, a recent Arts Council inquiry into who knows what in poetry was a triumph for the familiar and the banal. And anyway, what’s it all for, when the market share is shrinking?The collapse of the Net Book Agreement means less poetry will get published, with fewer bookshops in which to find it. For the young and upcoming there are more and more glittering prizes, and in recent years young poets have been going off like bombs.

Groups and centres and courses sprang up – contemporary poetry and creative writing entered the national curriculum, poets entered schools and pubs and prisons. And yes, I have to say that anything that promotes poetry has to be useful.And apt. In the last two decades writing poetry became one of the few growth industries in this ailing isle. As the dole queues lengthened it seemed more and more people turned to writing. I hope the work of the Forward Poetry Trust, with organisations like The Poetry Society, help to dispel any remaining prejudice people have about the role of poetry in their lives. Any doubts as to the potential pitfalls were set aside as venues were booked, poemcards and posters printed and powerful organisations like the BBC and the Arts Council offered enthusiastic support.
Why do it? Because it’s fun. We set out to break down the barriers and embarrassment associated with reading poetry aloud. If you can break through our traditional Anglo-Saxon reticence and allow more of the Celtic into our lives we would all admit to liking a little poetry from somewhere.
